About the project
Our Research
Our project initiative focuses on uncovering and addressing significant health disparities in Chicago, driven by historical segregation and systemic racism. Through partnerships with local communities, we aim to promote health equity and empower underserved populations.
Our Partners
The Barbershop Project
We partnered with 4 barbershops in Chicago – George’s Barber Shop, Beauti PRO, Cut it Out Curt, and Principle Barbers – to recruit 161 participants as a part of a project to uncover the relationships between neighborhood homicide rate, stress, and lung cancer.

Collected Research + Our Findings
Project Impact
Our study showed that being exposed to neighborhood violence is linked to higher levels of hair cortisol, a stress hormone.
In context of other collected research, our findings highlight the critical need for targeted interventions to improve health outcomes in underserved communities. By understanding the links between neighborhood violence, stress, and diseases like lung cancer, we strive to create meaningful change.
